How To Order Mat Board
The steps below can be used as a guideline to help you determine what size mat board and window size to purchase.
1) Measure the artwork or picture that you would like to mat
We recommend using a measuring device with 1/16" increments. Convert metric to inches using our conversion calculator.
2) Determine the inner dimensions of your mat board
Typically, the mat board window should be 1/2 inch smaller than the artwork being matting, which will give an overlap of 1/4 inch around the perimeter of the artwork. This will allow enough room to tape the artwork in place.
Our Standard Sized Mat Board page will automatically calculate a 1/4 inch perimeter overlap. For example, if an 8" x 10" window is selected, the actual size of the window will be 7.5" x 9.5". If a smaller or larger overlap is needed, please use the Custom Sized Mat Board page.
Our Custom Sized Mat Board page does NOT automatically calculate overlap. The dimensions you choose will be the exact size of the mat board window. Centered windows are only available when ordering online at this time. If the mat window is needed in a different position, or for more details about Bulk Custom Mat orders, please contact us.
3) Determine the outside dimensions of your mat board
To determine the outside dimension of the mat, the space around the window must be calculated for each side.
For example, if a 15" x 19" window is selected, and 2 inches of matting around the window size is required, each side would need to be 4 inches larger. The outside dimensions to order would need to be 19" x 23".
When ordering from our Custom Size area, the outside dimension must be at least 2 inches larger than the window size (1 inch around the perimeter of the window).
* All orders are shipped with a packing slip which states: Each ordered mat boards' inside and outside dimension, opening shape, and color.
